PRESS RELEASE FROM THE TOWN HALL OF MAZARRÓN CONCERNING THE ‘RED ALERT’ WARNING DECLARED TODAY IN THE REGION

The Mayor of Mazarrón Gaspar Miras, announced tonight the implementation of the Municipal Emergency Plan in its phase of pre-emergency with regards to the red alert in the region of Murcia, due to the heavy rainfall forecast by the Meteorology State Agency.
Furthermore, the Mayor presided an emergency meeting in the Town Hall of Mararrón which was attended by the Civil Protection Officers and by the Municipal Emergency Service (SEM), as well as the local Police, the Guardia Civil and the Red Cross, as well as practically the full contingency of the Government team of Councillors.
At the meeting it was decided to suspend all school classes within the municipality of Mazarrón for Thursday and Friday, as well as closing the Day Centre for Senior Citizens, for Intellectually handicapped and Alzheimer sufferers and the Centres for the Early Attention to the Public. The closure of the municipal sports centre was also recommended.
In view of the heavy rainfall predicted, the areas most likely to be affected were discussed at said meeting,in particular La Bahia, the areas surrounding the Rambla de la Moreras and the areas most at risk of flooding in the urbanization of Camposol, where action plans in case of emergency are being put in place.
The advice offered to the residents of the Municipality of Mazarrón is to avoid unnecessary travel on Thursday and Friday due to the heavy rainfall forecast.
In an emergency, you are advised to call 112 which is the Regional Emergency number, either to seek assistance or to receive any type of information with regards to the ‘ALERT’ in course.
The advice from 112 in cases such as this, is to keep roofs and covered areas free from leaves and blockages, as well as all drainpipes around the house. Check the areas in your home most likely to flooding and do what you can to protect them. Put documents and objects of value where they cannot be damaged by water. Make sure everybody in the family knows how to disconnect water, electricity and gas. Prepare water, food and medicine that you may need.
At the same time, watch the weather forecast on the communications channels of the Town Hall, on their web-page and on social media, as well as any other information providers such as the 112 social media page. Keep away from any area likely to flooding, especially in the rambla riverbed. Do not park anywhere near where there may be a danger of water currents, in order to avoid being swept away. Try and avoid unnecessary travel. Do not leave your home during heavy rainfall, and if you need to travel use public transport and stay on main roads.
