Until July 13 Fascinating exhibition in Puerto de Mazarron showing how European expats have influenced the Region of Murcia
Huellas de la Europeización en la Región de Murcia at the Casa del Mar includes the story of pioneer aviator Hans Nonnast, a German chemist who settled in Mazarrón
An itinerant exhibition entitled “Huellas de la Europeización en la Región de Murcia”, tracing the ways in which immigrants have influenced the Region of Murcia in recent decades, is visiting the Casa del Mar in Puerto de Mazarrón on June 16 and will remain on display there until July 13.
The exhibition traces 12 families who migrated to Murcia from different parts of Europe and how they left an impression on the municipalities in which they settled: in the case of Mazarrón, the story told is that of the German chemist Hans Nonnast, who on August 8, 1915 astonished locals by flying over Puerto de Mazarrón in a prototype glider of his own making.
He had arrived in Mazarrón four years previously to work at the Santa Elisa smelting plant but also busied himself opening the first gymnasium in the municipality, and his grandson Fernando still spends the summer in this part of the Costa Cálida.
“Huellas de la Europeización en la Región de Murcia” is visiting six venues this summer, and reaches Mazarrón as the second port of call after Cartagena before moving on to Águilas, Lorca, Cieza and Murcia.
The exhibition can be seen at the Casa del Mar (Calle La Torre, 60, next to the fishing port administration building) in Puerto de Mazarrón until July 13, opening on Thursday to Sunday in the morning from 10.00 to 13.00 and from Tuesday to Sunday in the evening from 17.00 to 21.00.
